Pendant de nombreuses années, Claude Tresmontant s'est attaché au problème de la langue originelle et de la date de composition des Evangiles. Ses recherches portent sur les correspondances existant entre l'hébreu de la Bible hébraïque et le grec de la Septante. Elles lui ont permis de démontrer que les Evangiles ont été écrits en hébreu à une date très proche des événements qu'ils rapportent. Publié pour la première fois en 1983, Le Christ hébreu donnait au grand public les premiers résultats de ces recherches.
Il constitue son oeuvre maîtresse, celle qui suscita le plus de débats car elle mettait en cause la croyance largement répandue selon laquelle les Evangiles auraient été écrits longtemps après la mort du Christ. Bien que son oeuvre soit largement méconnue, Claude Tresmontant est l'un des plus grands métaphysiciens catholiques du XXe siècle. Il démontra le caractère irrationnel de l'athéisme contemporain.
Mieux que quiconque et le premier, il sut tirer tous les enseignements métaphysiques des grandes découvertes scientifiques de son temps. Il réaffirma sans relâche le caractère rationnel de la foi qui n'est pas le sentiment subjectif auquel notre monde l'identifie parfois. Claude Tresmontant a été un précurseur. De nombreux ouvrages parus depuis, à partir de recherches différentes, aboutissent à des résultats convergents.
Ils jettent les bases d'une connaissance profondément renouvelée de l'histoire, de la langue et par conséquent du sens des Evangiles.
